Cinema Memories of Morecambe
Once they all came to Morecambe.
From Roger Moore to Abbott & Costello. Laurence Olivier to Trevor Howard, they came to switch on the illuminations, judge the bathing beauties, stay in the swanky Midland Hotel or tread the boards of the town’s theatres.
Stars of the silver screen, right here in Morecambe.
And we produced our own too. Thora Hird was spotted in her home town by movie star George Formby (at one time he was the highest grossing star in Britain) and went on to appear in movies including The Entertainer, which was filmed in the resort.
Eric Morecambe may be best known for television, but together with Little ‘Ern, he appeared on the big screen too.
In 1947, film legends Laurel & Hardy came to Morecambe for a week. They stayed at The Elms Hotel in Bare, appeared on stage at The Winter Gardens and made a radio broadcast from the theatre.
Yes, Hollywood came to Morecambe
Which it did every week of course. In the resorts many cinemas, the world was your oyster as the flicker of the projectionist’s magic beam transported audiences to anywhere they could imagine and beyond.
Many of the old cinemas are gone now, or sit empty. But Morecambe remembers.
The stars still shine.
